Statement to Philadelphia School Board in support of restoring certified librarian positions within the district

Author Jarrett Krosoczka says “It is an awfully sad misconception that librarians simply check books in and out. The library is the heart of a school, and without a librarian, it is but an empty shell.”

School libraries and librarians help combat the digital divide and provide equitable access to resources and materials. Certified school librarians work with teachers to help students develop both traditional and emerging literacies. In partnership with classroom teachers, they develop instruction that leads to authentic learning experiences where students develop critical thinking skills.  School library media specialists select and curate materials that reflect diversity, cultivate social and emotional development, build on a student’s zest for learning, and support standards-based learning as well as independent exploration.

Over three dozen national studies have shown a direct correlation between strong school library programs and student achievement. Classroom book collections and access to devices and software cannot replace a school library program.

Certified school librarians encourage critical thinking, curiosity and lifelong learning; instill a love for reading; establish and maintain a library environment that is inclusive, welcoming, safe and a place of discovery and joy; provide students and staff with a curated library collection that supports learning and personal needs that cannot be matched by any classroom collection. They also provide professional development, support and vetted resources to administrators and colleagues to enhance curriculum and overall learning; They are one of a district’s best bargains. A school library media specialist is the highly-qualified and certified educator of the largest classroom in the school.

In summary, restoring certified school librarian positions to the Philadelphia School District will provide students with an essential learning experience that cannot be provided through other means. An investment in certified school librarians is an investment in the education and well-being of all students. Thank you
