Why School Libraries Matter

Despite extensive research demonstrating the positive impact of school libraries and librarians on student achievement, the School District of Philadelphia has been eliminating school librarian positions in its schools. It's time to reverse these cuts and restore school librarians across the city. Here's what the research says.

In their article "School librarians matter: The unexpected findings of research on school libraries," Keith Curry Lance and Debra E. Kachel highlight the crucial role of school librarians in students' academic success. Through a comprehensive review of research on school libraries and librarians, the authors found that students in schools with well-staffed and well-funded libraries tend to have higher achievement levels. School librarians provide essential support to students and teachers in the form of research assistance, digital literacy training, and access to technology and resources.

The authors also argue that school librarians play a critical role in promoting equity and diversity in education. In schools with diverse student populations, librarians can help students find materials and resources that reflect their identities and experiences. Additionally, librarians can support students who face academic and personal challenges, including those with learning disabilities and those who are English language learners.

Despite the many benefits of school libraries and librarians, budget cuts and other factors have led to a decline in the number of school librarian positions in recent years. The authors emphasize the need for policymakers, educators, and parents to recognize the value of school librarians and advocate for their continued presence in schools.

School librarians matter - and their contributions are essential to promoting academic success, equity, and diversity in education. It is crucial to prioritize and invest in school library programs and ensure that every student has access to a well-staffed and well-funded library. Despite the benefits of school libraries and librarians, budget cuts and other factors have led to a decline in the number of school librarian positions in recent years. This trend is concerning. It limits students' access to critical resources and support.

Here at PARSL we believe it is time to prioritize and invest in school library programs and ensure that every student has access to a well-staffed and well-funded library. If you agree, please add your name to the petition to the Superintendent and make restoring school librarians a High Priority. Together we can help ensure that all SDP students have the opportunity to succeed.
